LISLE, IL (June 15, 2014) – After being down 2-0 at the half, Sky Blue FC (2-6-5, 11 pts) fought back to earn a point on the road as the New Jersey club battled to a 2-2 draw against the Chicago Red Stars (6-4-2, 20 pts) at Benedictine University Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Sky Blue FC’s Lindsi Cutshall and Maya Hayes scored their first professional goals to help the club break its three-game losing streak.
The Chicago Red Stars got on the board first in the 21st minute. Midfielder Zakiya Bywaters settled a bouncing ball near the left sideline before passing back to midfielder Emily Van Egmond towards the middle of the field. Van Egmond took a touch and then chipped the ball into the box to forward Alyssa Mautz, who was making a diagonal run. Mautz was able to dive for the ball and head it over SBFC keeper Jill Loyden for the first tally of the match.
The Red Stars would strike again ten minutes later starting with a throw-in by defender Kecia Morway to Van Egmond. Van Egmond had time to settle the ball before sending a diagonal cross towards the box. Forward Jen Hoy was able to head the ball down to set up Bywaters, who took one touch to settle and then placed the ball past Loyden into the right corner of the net.
In the 45th minute, Sky Blue FC defender Caitlin Foord was called for a foul in the box that resulted in a penalty kick for Chicago. Vanessa DiBernardo took the penalty for the Red Stars, but her shot deflected off the left post.
Sky Blue FC had no shots on goal in the first half as Chicago took a 2-0 lead into the locker room. At the start of the second half, the momentum continued to favor the Red Stars as both DiBernardo and Lori Chalupny struck the crossbar.
However, Sky Blue FC would finally get on the scoreboard in the 60th minute. Foord gained possession of the ball and had a nice give-and-go with defender Cami Levin to work up the right flank. Foord made her way to the edge of the box, then struck a hard cross that deflected off the body of defender Lindsi Cutshall into the net for her first professional goal of her career.
Sky Blue FC would score again just three minutes later when midfielder Katy Freels dribbled up the middle of the field before passing a beautiful through ball to a sprinting Hayes. Hayes one-timed her shot into the right side of the goal, beating Red Stars goalkeeper Taylor Vancil down low for the equalizer.
Both sides would have a few more scoring opportunities to try and break the stalemate, but at the final whistle the score remained 2-2. Chicago outshot SBFC 14-7 and Loyden recorded three saves in the contest.
Sky Blue FC returns home on Sunday, June 22, to host the Boston Breakers for the final meeting of the 2014 season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Purchase tickets at tickets.skybluefc.com.
