PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 30, 2014) – Sky Blue FC (0-2-2, 2 pts) suffered a 2-0 loss to undefeated Seattle Reign FC (4-0-0, 12 pts) on a rainy Wednesday night at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ. Seattle is the only unbeaten team remaining in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) through the first four games of the 2014 season while SBFC drops its second game in a row. Seattle forward Nahomi Kawasumi led the offensive charge for the Reign, scoring the first goal and assisting on the second.
Seattle struck first in the 14th minute when Kawasumi capitalized on a misplayed ball by Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Jill Loyden. The wet field conditions were a factor as Loyden slipped while attempting to clear the ball out of the box. Kawasumi took advantage of her opportunity and put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead going into the locker room.
Sky Blue FC came out stronger in the second half, but the Reign would strike once again. In the 50th minute, Seattle forward Beverly Goebel scored her first goal of the season off a pass by Kawasumi.
Sky Blue FC had some late goal scoring opportunities, including a strike from midfielder Nanase Kiryu that forced a diving save by Reign keeper Hope Solo, but the NJ squad could not convert its chances. In the 87th minute, Sophie Schmidt was denied on a penalty kick by Solo. A minute later, Schmidt sent a shot sailing narrowly over the crossbar, which would prove to be the last threatening opportunity for SBFC.
“The weather was a factor for both teams, but both teams adjusted really well,” Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra said. “I thought it was a very well-played game. We had a penalty and a few chances late in the game but there wasn’t much difference between the teams. I was happy with the way we played.”
Sky Blue FC’s next match is on Saturday, May 3 when the NJ squad hosts the Boston Breakers at Yurcak Field. Kickoff is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET. Sky Blue faced Boston for the first time this season on April 27 in Allston, Mass., falling by a score of 3-2.
