SEATTLE (June 28, 2014) – Sky Blue FC (3-6-7, 16 pts) became the first club to shut out Seattle Reign FC (11-0-3, 36 pts) this season after battling to a 0-0 stalemate on Saturday night at the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.
Sky Blue FC got the first dangerous look on goal in the 5th minute. After a Seattle foul, defender Christie Rampone took the free kick for SBFC and played a ball into the box. A scramble inside the box resulted in a loose ball rolling out in front of midfielder Katy Freels. Freels took a one-time shot on target but Reign goalkeeper Hayley Kopmeyer was able to tip it over the bar for a corner.
Seattle Reign FC had several chances in the first half to take the lead, but could not get anything past Sky Blue FC keeper Brittany Cameron. Cameron earned her second consecutive start for the NJ club and recorded four saves going into halftime.
Both teams came out of the locker room with more energy and physicality as Sky Blue FC created several close chances off of free kicks. However, in the 59th minute, Reign midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi crossed the ball into the box and was headed by forward Sydney Leroux. Her header deflected off the left post and was eventually cleared away by the SBFC defense.
Throughout the second half, Freels had multiple scoring opportunities for the NJ club, but could not convert. As the game progressed, Seattle’s sense of urgency increased but Sky Blue FC’s back line was able to keep the Reign off the scoreboard.
In added time, Reign FC would get one last chance to take the lead when midfielder Jess Fishlock ripped a one-time shot from outside the box. However, her shot would bounce off the crossbar in front of the goal and was eventually cleared away by SBFC midfielder Ashley Nick.
Seattle Reign FC remains unbeaten this season while Sky Blue FC extends its unbeaten streak to four games. SBFC was outshot 8-12 by the Reign, and Seattle had an 8-1 corner kick advantage. Cameron recorded six saves in the match.
SBFC returns home to Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. on July 2 to host the Houston Dash at 7 p.m. ET. Purchase tickets attickets.skybluefc.com.
