BOYDS, M.D. (May 21, 2014) – Sky Blue FC (1-3-4, 7 pts) and the Washington Spirit (3-4-1, 10 pts) battled to a 3-3 draw on Wednesday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md., which featured a total of five goals in the second half.
Both teams had scoring chances earlier in the first half but the Washington Spirit got on the board first. The Spirit had possession of the ball in the club’s offensive third, and it eventually landed to defender Crystal Dunn. Dunn took one touch towards the box, and then slipped a pass with the outside of her right foot to fellow defender Robyn Gayle. Gayle turned into the box, cut to her right around Sky Blue FC defender CoCo Goodson and beat SBFC keeper Jill Loyden with a low shot in the 39th minute.
Washington took the 1-0 lead into the locker room, but Sky Blue FC struck back early in the second half.
In the 47th minute, defender Kelley O’Hara – who was playing up top for the match – played a ball from the left side towards the middle of the box for forward Jonelle Filigno. Filigno used her first touch to beat Spirit goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris and was able to put the ball into the back of the net before rolling out of bounds. It was Filigno’s first goal of the season.
The New Jersey club would take the lead five minutes later off a direct kick from midfielder Katy Freels. After being fouled by Dunn, Freels took the free kick and bent her shot into the far side netting for her third goal of the season.
Sky Blue FC would get on the scoreboard one more time in the 65th minute off a counterattack. The Spirit was awarded a free kick on the right side of the field outside of the box. After Freels cleared the initial kick away, SBFC forward Monica Ocampo collected the ball outside the box, turned and headed towards Washington’s net.
Once Ocampo reached the midline, she played a ball down the right side to an overlapping Christie Rampone. Rampone played a one-time ball into the box, which deflected off of O’Hara and rolled over the goal line for her first National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) goal of her career.
Washington continued to apply high pressure on Sky Blue and would get another tally in the 74th minute. Midfielder Lori Lindsey stole the ball and took a shot from distance. The ball bounced off a SBFC defender, then off of Loyden, and then off the post before making its way into the net.
In the second minute of added time in the second half, a handball was called on Sky Blue FC inside the box and the Spirit was awarded a penalty kick. Midfielder Diana Matheson converted for the equalizer, and the score would remain 3-3 at the final whistle.
The Spirit outshot the NJ club 16-15, but Sky Blue FC had 10 shots on goal while Washington had 7. Loyden recorded 4 saves during the contest.
Sky Blue FC’s next match is on Saturday, May 24, on the road as the squad takes on Portland Thorns FC for the second time this season. In their first meeting, the two clubs battled to a 1-1 stalemate at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. on April 19.
