Texas Tech alum drafted No. 15 overall in NWSL College Draft
MORRISTOWN, NJ (Monday, Feb. 10, 2014) – Sky Blue FC announced today the signing of Texas Tech defender Hayley Haagsma with an option for the 2015 season. Haagsma was drafted in the second round of the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft by SBFC. Per club and league policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
“Hayley is going to challenge for playing time,” technical director and head coach Jim Gabarra said. “ We believe that she will develop into one of the top defenders in the NWSL and we’re looking forward to seeing her grow as she gains experience.”
The California native is one of the top defenders in Red Raider history, helping the squad make back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. During her senior year, Haagsma earned All-Big 12 honors as Texas Tech set a school record with 18 wins and advanced to the second-round of NCAA postseason play.
She will be the second Red Raider alum to join Sky Blue FC, joining midfielder Taylor Lytle who was signed by the club in 2013 as a discovery player.
“I’m really excited to continue my soccer career into the next level,” Haagsma said. “I’m looking forward to playing with and against some of the best female players in the world and I can’t wait to join Sky Blue FC on the road to a NWSL championship.”
Haagsma also gained national team experience last spring. The Red Raider was invited to the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team training camp from May 11-18, 2013 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. She was one of seven defenders named to the 24-player camp.
Prior to Texas Tech, Haagsma was a four-year letter-winner at Valley Christian High School in her hometown Cerritos, Calif. During her high school career, the defender earned first team All-Olympic League honors as well as being named the Olympic League MVP in 2009. Her team was also a finalist for the CIF Championship that season.
