President Obama Honors 2009 WPS Champions Sky Blue FC
Washington, D.C. (Thursday, July 1, 2010) – President Barack Obama welcomed Sky Blue FC, the 2009 WPS champions, to the White House on Thursday, July 1st.
In his remarks, Obama congratulated Sky Blue FC for their perseverance through three coaching changes during the season and for coming out victorious in three straight road games within the span of eight days to claim the inaugural WPS championship. Sky Blue FC defeated the Los Angeles Sol, 1-0, on Aug. 22, 2009 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. with midfielder Heather O’Reilly providing the game-winning goal.
During the ceremony, Sky Blue FC CEO and President Thomas Hofstetter and Sky Blue FC captain Christie Rampone, who served as the team’s player-coach during its championship run, presented President Obama with a Sky Blue FC jersey featuring his name and the number “09”, representing the year of the club’s triumph.
Sky Blue FC will return to action on Wednesday, July 7th, when the team welcomes Abby Wambach and the Washington Freedom to Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway.
